" Lata is the dub/global bass/electrolatino project from chilean Andrew Collyer, under which he has released music on labels such as Akwaaba [France/Ghana], Post World Industries [USA], The Rebel Sounds [Canada], Pueblo Nuevo [Chile] & Japón Records [Argentina].

Andrew lives and works in Santiago, although as a youth he lived in Arica, the chilean city closest to both Peru and Bolivia, sandwiched between the desert and the ocean. So, spending a lot time in the desert and in the ocean as a kid exposed him to the primary ideas of space, rhythm and flow. Playing every rock instrument in many bands growing up helped too. And later, going to architecture school and then working as an architect by day and making music at night sealed the deal.

Lata aims to operate beyond traditional styles or genres. Its sound can be described as experimental electronics, heavily influenced by dub, dancehall and latin music, filtered through global technological abstraction and southamerican flavour. There is too the typical latin habit of deliberately mixing & stirring things up, but always through what could be described as dub tactics & ethics.

During 2011 Lata´s tracks and remixes were featured on many articles on the blogosphere and were selected on various compilations, appearing alongside some of the heaviest names of the global bass underground. Of all these, the highlight was remixing mildtape & Ebsa´s anthem “Free as air” for the 5th Anniversary release of the LibreCommeLair label.

The desert and the sea work in cycles. The release of the first Lata EP on LCL on December, 31, 2011, exactly one year from discovering the label´s existence is a fine example of the cyclic nature of art & life. "

Andrew vit et travaille à Santiago, bien qu'il ait grandi à Arica, une ville du Chili proche des frontières du Pérou et de la Bolivie, prise en sandwich entre le désert et l'océan. L'exposition précoce à ces différents environnements l'ont confronté enfant aux notions d'espace, de rythme et de flux. Il a joué d'à peu près tous les instruments possibles dans des groupes de rock, et plus tard est entré en école d'architecture pour finir par travailler comme architecte le jour et musicien la nuit pour sceller le deal.

Lata essaie d'opérer au delà des genres. Son "son" peut être décrit comme de l'éelcto expérimentale, largement influencée par le dub, le dancehall et la musique latine, peinte avec des saveurs sud-américaines. On y trouve aussi l'habitude typiquement latine de mélanger volontairement les styles, mais toujours avec ce que l'on pourrait appeler une approche et une éthique dub.

En 2011, les morceaux et remixes de Lata ont été largement commentés dans la blogosphère et sélectionnés pour diverses compilations, apparaissant aux côtés de grands noms du "global bass underground". Le point d'orgue a été la publication d'un remix du tube de mildtape et Ebsa "Free as air" pour le 5e anniversaire du label LibreCommeLair (LCL) .
